Wherever you look in Chiang Mai you are likely to see a massage parlor, most of the massage parlors are very reputable with fully qualified staff but maybe it is time for a slightly different experience. The Woman’s Prison in Chiang Mai has various programs that are run where the soon to be released women are taught life skills and one such program is the ex-prisoner massage parlor that has been set up. The women are watched over at all times without it being intrusive and is an excellent opportunity for the women as finding their way into work after prison life is over is often incredibly difficult.

Chiang Mai is home to the Womens Correctional Institution where they have set up a massage rehabilitation program in order to help the inmates easily integrate into society.

Though these massages used to be done right on the prison grounds, the prison has been moved to a different location. Now the pampering is performed in an inviting teak building, located on Rachvithi Road, just a short walk from the closed prison doors.

Thanks to a rehabilitation program for women with non-custodial sentences, they learn the ancient art of Thai massage during their time in prison.

Once they have only 6 months left on their sentence they start working in the prison massage parlor earning a salary that will be given to them at the end of their sentence. Thanks to the program, they get a profession and a degree with which they can earn a living and never commit another crime. Besides, the reputation of good professionals will open the doors for them, because the professional level of the prisoners is recognized throughout Chiang Mai, as they have the advantage of having learned the art of massage and its techniques during their time in prison in an intensive way and with hundreds of hours of practice.
